Willie's Picnic - 7/5/03

Neil and Willie Nelson joined up for a little jammin down in Austin, TX.According to Bill Wallace on BNB:

Neil's duet with the dancer was an icon of weird Americana, but it made amazing sense. Like a George Catlin painting copied by a surrealist, Neil and the god of wild turkeys whirled in a dance that was sometimes cooperative, sometimes almost antagonistic, while Crazy Horse played like a buffalo stampede or the thunder you hear just before lightning strikes.

Pearl Jam performed a fantastic show outside Washington DC on 7/2/03. Final encore was Neil's Rockin in the Free World.Here's the setlist and some reviews.

The debate goes on regarding "artistic freedom of expression" versus "fan's rights to hear the hits". Matthew Gilbert in the Boston Globe writes in an article "Change? How dare they?- Career makeovers, whether popular or not, take courage":

Fans often feel hostile toward artistic changes in direction, like parents whose children are misbehaving. We fit our icons into boxes on our music racks, or on our bookshelves, or in our video cabinets, so that when Harrison Ford decides to play a romantic lead, we look away. We forget that these artists may be bored delivering the same old same old -- even if we aren't tired of receiving it. They want to stay interested in their work, to protect themselves from cruising on automatic pilot.

But these days, Neil Young, a guy from Canada who has lived in California for almost his entire career, feels just as crucial to Austin music as Willie or Doug or Stevie Ray. Just look around, and what do you see? Alt-country acts that all but hoist their copies of "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" onstage with them. Bar bands that can launch into "Like A Hurricane" on cue. Punks who have to admit "Live Rust" is the toughest concert album of all time.
