Neil Young News
In 2004 Rustie, Mike "Expecting 2 Fly" Cordova posted a series of articles on his experience listening to all of Neil Young's albums in chronological order. Here is one in the series. For a complete listing, see Albums in Order reviews.
Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 14:51:36 -0800 (PST) I've started my journey, my self-appointed task, of
listening to all of the Neil Young albums of original
songs (including Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, and Neil Young solo.) Tonight, I
listened to the three original Buffalo Springfield albums,
Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield Again, and Last
Time Around.
All of these were released before I was aware who Neil
Young was. But there is something about one of the songs
that is very special in my personal Neil Young history. I
have a very distinct memory of being 11 years old in 1967
delivering the Phoenix Gazette newspaper and listening to
the radio playing For What It's Worth. That lead guitar
part, that reverberating thingy, was the first time I'd
ever heard a sound that Neil Young had made. I would not
make that connection between the sound and Neil for many
years, but I do remember hearing it. And that's the song
that kicks off my cd version of the first Buffalo
Springfield album. As most of you know, the actual real
album had Baby Don't Scold Me instead of FWIW which was
added later when it became a big single hit and when it
was added on a later edition, Baby Don't Scold Me was
deleted.
Anyhow, listening to these albums...I know that the Buffalo Springfield is
known for their live shows, but all three of their albums
to me are very strong, very powerful. I love Richie's
vocals and he wrote some very nice songs. Kind Woman, the
last song of the last album is in very many ways the very
first Poco song. Stills has some absolutely incredible
moments with FWIW, Rock And Roll Woman, Hung Upside Down,
and, IMHO, the absolute best Buffalo Springfield song ever Bluebird.
Needless to say, Neil strikes a wonderful chord with me
for the songs he made for the Buffalo Springfield; Clancy, Out Of My Mind,
Mr. Soul (lyrics analysis), Broken Arrow, I Am A Child, and of course the
wonderful (ahem) Expecting To Fly.
